SPORT AGAINST CRIME & HIV/AIDS: SPORT ACHIEVERS AWARDS

The Department of Sport, Recreation, Arts & Culture is facilitating a two day event on 30  31 March 2001 in Queenstown, which is a twofold 
campaign to promote sport against crime, and against the spreading of HIV/Aids.

The department is organising these events in collaboration with other government departments, S.A. Police Services, sport & recreation 
structures, locally based organizations, community volunteers and municipalities. The venue for 30 March 2001 is the Indoor Sport Centre in 
Queenstown (starting at 09H00), and the venue for 31 March 2001 is the Agricultural Show-grounds (starting at 07H30).

The first day will focus on Wellness in the community and approximately 305 participants invited and 70 guests have been invited. The 
Director of Sport and Recreation, Mr Nkwinti, will deliver the message of the day.

Wellness Day is a high profile annual, national project.It seeks to address the health and well being of all South Africans. The society 
has a battle-scarred background of members of our communities who bear the scars of psychological and physical tragedies. The Departments 
of Sport and Recreation (provincial and national), are committed to achieving normality through participation in sport and recreational 
activities. They also aim to involve people of all races, ages and backgrounds.

The programme will provide fun and games for pre-school children, which will include tug-of-war, relay races, egg and spoon races, and 
block races. This will be followed by a mass aerobics display. After the lunch break drum majorettes will perform, and there will be 
cultural performances, including a guitar recital and a drama relating to HIV/AIDS, which was organized for Day 2, has taken Sport Against 
Crime and HIV/AIDS, as its theme.

In a time when crime abounds in our society, and in line with governments commitment to intensify the fight against crime, the Department 
is taking a stand against crime and the spreading of the HIV/AIDS epidemic, by actively promoting mass participation of sport amongst the 
youth. The objectives of Sport Against Crime and HIV/AIDS are to create an awareness amongst the youth relating to the role of sport as a 
means of building the community and to foster partnerships with stakeholders and inter-departmental co-operation.

The following sports will be played: soccer, handball, volleyball, karate, judo, traditional games, boxing, table tennis, basketball, rugby 
and softball.

Four hundred and forty participants and guests are expected.The curtain raiser in the afternoon will include S.A. Police versus the 
Department of Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture (veterans), and the main match will be a soccer match  Queenstown versus Aliwal North.

The MEC for Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture, Mrs Nosimo Balindlela will be hosting the 2nd day, as well as the banquet in the evening. 
The guests of honour over the two days will be the U.C.B. Chief Executive Officer, Gerald Majola, the Executive Mayor of the Chris Hani 
District Municipality, Mr M. Sigabi and the Mayor of Queenstown, Mr G. Xoseni.

There will also be some of sporting heroes present whom you can meet in person, and you may get a chance to chat to them. Sporting heroes 
you can expect to meet will be Vuyani Bungu, Hawk Makepula, Mfuneko Ngam, Mbulelo Botile and Ms Zanele Situ, South African representative 
at the Sydney Paralympic Games and gold medallist for Javelin, and others.

On the evening of 31 March 2001, Sport Achievers Awards will be given out to honour top sport and recreation achievers. The guest of 
honour is the Minister for Sport and Recreation, Mr Ngconde Balfour.

The message of these two days is to encourage our communities to be more physically active, and to lead more healthy lifestyles, to 
participate more in recreational activities, sporting activities and indigenous games. The two days are also about nation building and 
breaking down the racial barriers, and to bring greater unity to all the people of the province.
